On November 4, 2020, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors and the Goochland County Historical Society Board of Directors officially cut the ribbon to open our new home at 2924 River Road West in the Courthouse area of Goochland. We are now open our regular hours of Wednesday through Friday, 10:00 am until 3:00 pm and the second Saturday of each month, also 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. We are practicing social distancing and cleaning due to the ongoing pandemic so face masks are required and we suggest making an appointment if you would like to do research, but we also are taking walk-in visits. If you are in the Goochland Courthouse area, stop in and see the new building!
The Goochland County Historical Society is still busy moving into our new building at 2924 River Road West, next to the Courthouse Green. We are experiencing a delay (caused by COVID-19) in items needed before we can open to the public. At this time, we are aiming for a fall date for our opening of the History Center. We appreciate your patience during our move and look forward to seeing you again when we reopen.
The Goochland County Historical Society is closing to the public until further notice. In response to the coronavirus, county government declared a local state of emergency yesterday, Friday, March 13th, encouraging “community groups and organizations to cancel or reschedule all large group gatherings through at least August 31st.“ Thank you for your patience and understanding.
To help celebrate Goochland Day on May 9, the Goochland County Historical Society is sponsoring a photography contest. The contest will hold competitions for students and for adults in several different categories. It will celebrate “what Goochland means to you—the people, the animals, the plants, the buildings, the river, the scenes and all that make Goochland special.”
At the adult level, both amateur and professional photographers are encouraged to submit entries. At the student level, there will be two competitions: one for high schoolers and one for those below high school age. For your convenience, guidelines and the application form are enclosed with this newsletter. Please note that entries become the property of the Goochland County Historical Society and will not be returned. Selected entries may be used on our website or blog or in our calendar.
Winning photographs will be exhibited to the public as part of the Goochland Day celebration. Get out your camera and explore Goochland through your camera’s lens!
