MEMBERS'
MEETING, Sunday, May 23, 3 p.m. Was
held at "RiversBend" in Crozier. Members of the
Society were invited to attend. Mr. Langhorne Gibson, Jr.,
made a presentation entitled "Cabell's Canal:
The Story of the James River and Kanawha." The author's
most recent book is "For the Love of Greenwood".
"RiversBend"
was built in 1992 and combines a mix of Mississippi Lowland
architecture with Jefferson?s Palladian influence. "RiversBend"
is aptly named, as the James River and the Kanawha Canal are
visible from the observatory that crowns the home. The property
was featured on the Society's 2008 House Tour. [Description

Receives Grant From National Trust for Historic Preservation
for Second Union School
The grant will help pay for the rehabilitation phase
of the Second Union School in western Goochland. The school,
a two-room building, was constructed in 1918 through the efforts
of Julius Rosenwald, then President of Sears, Roebuck and
Company, and the Rosenwald Foundation. Grant monies were provided
by Lowe's Preservation Fund from the Lowe's Charitable and
Educational Foundation. Information regarding the National
Trust's Rosenwald Schools Initiative is contained in their
website,
and general information about Rosenwald Schools is contained
on Wikipedia.
Rehabilitation of the Second Union School will allow for the
creation of a center for the history of black education in
Goochland and surrounding areas. The Society was instrumental
in obtaining recognition of the school on state and national
historic building registries. Funding to start the project
was provided by generous support from interested members of
the Goochland community and the Society. Additional information
will be forthcoming. Should you wish to make a contribution
towards the rehabilitation phase, please call the Society.

First
Goochland County Historical Marker Unveiled At Ellisville
Bridge
On Sunday February 15th, the Historical Society and the Goochland
County Board of Supervisors unveiled the first County highway
marker. The marker commemorates the origins of the Ellisville
Community on River Road and officially names the bridge which
crosses Highway 288 on River Road, the Ellisville Bridge,
in honor of the Ellis family. A program about the Ellis family
history followed at St. James Baptist Church with presentations
by Ellis family members, community members and Supervisor
James Eads. Supervisor William Quarles led the program.

A
project to increase the historical content presented on this
web site is underway. If you should have materials that would
enhance information about Goochland's past, please consider
sharing. The Society will photograph items and scan documents
suitable for presentation at your convenience. Please contact
the Historical Center.

Note: Our photograph collections are a significant
holding of the Society. They tell many stories about our heritage
and serve as a resource for our publications. The Board of
Directors has adopted a photographic services policy that
makes the Society's photographs available. Please review the
Photographic Services
to view the fee schedule and the Photographic
Services Order Form to place an order. The order form
also contains the terms and conditions of use.

The
Society has acquired more than 1,200 volumes of genealogical
material from the library of Reverend Forrest D. Sheets, past
president of the Society and former pastor of Byrd Presbyterian
Church. See the May
2004 Newsletter in our archives for more information.

Facilities:The
Society maintains an Historical Center,
located just East of the Courthouse at 2875 River Road West
(Route 6). It houses our offices, research library, map and photograph
collections, and museum shop. Historical Society members
are available to welcome visitors to Goochland, assist researchers
and to answer mail or telephone inquiries about County history
or genealogical research. Our map collection offers maps from
1820 to the present with roads, churches, mills and transportation
depots. The photograph collection contains pictures of identified
persons, events and buildings in Goochland.
