2005 CALENDAR OF PAST EVENTS


MAY
May 15
th, Sunday at 3:30 PM: Program Meeting- (Open to the Public)
The program entitled "Saving the Rosenwald Schools in Goochland" was hosted by the Second Union Baptist Church located at 2843 Hadensville Fife Road (Rt. 606). After an overview of the Rosenwald program, one of the last remaining Rosenwald schools located adjacent to the Church was open for tours. More details were contained in the May Newsletter.

OCTOBER
October 16th, Sunday at 3:00 PM: Program Meeting-
The meeting was held at Ben Dover Farm which is located in the eastern area of Goochland County and bordered on the south by the James River and the north by River Road West. The Society recognized the long service given by Mr. Pete Williams in establishing and maintaining the Society's website and for his services as Treasurer. Mr. Allen Pell Crawford was the invited speaker for the meeting. Mr. Crawford discussed events and circumstances in the life of Thomas Jefferson and the process of gathering new archival research upon which his upcoming book, Twilight at Monticello: The Tragic Story of the Founding Father's Final Years and the Fall of the House of Jefferson, is based. Mr. Crawford's new book concerns Jefferson's life, and family's circumstances, after his retirement from public office. Twilight at Monticello will be published in 2006 by Random House. Mr. Crawford is also the author of Unwise Passions: A True Story of a Remarkable Woman and the First Great Scandal of Eighteenth–Century America. Following the meeting attendees had the opportunity to tour the grounds.

DECEMBER
December 11th, Sunday at 3:00 PM: Annual Meeting of the Membership-
The meeting was held at the Goochland County Library located at 3075 River Road West. A slate of proposed Board members, to replace those whose terms were expiring, was presented by Mr. Temple Bayliss, the Society's President. Additionally, a candidate to replace the retiring Treasurer, Mr. Pete Wiliams, was also presented to the Membership. The Membership unamiously approved the candidates. Mr. Bayliss expressed his gratitude to those members who contributed their time to the Society and in the preservation of Goochland's history, and encouraged other members of the Society to become active volunteers. Following the annual meeting portion of the program, a reception was held to honor Joe and Roselle Scales for their long and faithful support given to the Historical Society. The Scales were recognized for their many contributions to Goochland County and were presented with a remembrance. The reception that followed was co-hosted by The Goochland Garden Club.
